Client Stories – It’s Never too Late to Start Strength Training, Bob’s Proof of that.

At 86 years old, Bob came to Body Mentors with a simple goal: to build muscle, increase his strength, and maintain his independence for as long as possible. We began with a modified strength programme tailored to his current ability, with the long-term aim of progressing him to barbell training. It didn't take long before Bob exceeded those expectations.

Today, Bob is confidently training with a barbell and continues to make impressive
progress week after week, proving that it’s never too late to become stronger.

We recently sat down with Bob to ask him about his experience with strength training
and the impact it has had on his everyday life. Here’s what he had to say.

What guided you to start training with Strength Training in the first place?

My family suggested that I start training to keep healthy and help with my longevity.
Getting back into badminton and tennis after being out from a recurring shoulder injury
was a big driving force as well.

How have you found the style of training at Body Mentors?

I’ve liked every minute of it, Ryan has been a massive help in guiding me through. Having
really enjoyed the progression of the training, it’s made me very happy with how far I’ve come.
I’ve found the continuous progression has kept the training interesting. I never thought I
would be doing deadlifts!

How has strength training impacted your lifestyle?

I’m feeling a lot more active than before I started. It’s really helps with tasks I used to
find tricky like walking up stairs or walking long distances. I’ve recently been able to get
back in to the park run and get back on my bike due to strength training.

Was there anything you were apprehensive about before starting strength training?

Yes, I was apprehensive about what I was going to be doing in terms of exercises but I can
say I’ve found the training very seamless from the word go. The apprehension soon
faded after my initial consultation with Ryan after he thoroughly explained the process.

How do you keep the motivation to constantly show up and put in the effort during your sessions?

Simply, I keep telling myself I can do it, there is nothing I feel I can’t do when training with Ryan.
My biggest goal is to keep as fit as I can for as long as I can and I plan to keep strength
training well into my 90’s.

What do you enjoy most about strength training?

I get the most enjoyment knowing that every time I leave the gym I’m a better version of
myself and I’m giving myself the best chance at keeping my independence for as long
as possible.

Finally, what would you say to someone in a similar position to yourself who is thinking about strengthening training?

Don’t think about the what if’s and just get started, it’ll be the best thing you’ve ever
done. Don’t think about whether you should do strength training and embrace it and see
how far you can go. If you don’t give it a try you’ll never know what you could achieve!

If Bob has inspired you just like he has all of us at Body Mentors, get started on your strength training journey below!

With a background in Sports Therapy, I’ve seen how smart, consistent training can make a real difference, whether you're rehabbing an injury or building strength from the ground up. My approach is careful, tailored, and built on the belief that progress should feel both achievable and rewarding.

Weight Loss Medication: Why Maintaining Muscle Matters

When it comes to weight loss, it's easy to focus solely on the number on the scales, but this shouldn't be your only concern. It's important to understand where the weight you're losing is coming from, especially if you're currently taking, or considering, a course of GLP-1 receptor agonists (Ozempic, Mounjaro, Zepbound or Wegovy) also known as weight loss medication. Before starting any weight loss medication, I would always advise speaking to your GP or healthcare professional, particularly if you have any underlying health concerns or would like to discuss whether this type of treatment is appropriate for you.
