Are You Too Intimidated to Start Barbell Training?

Using a barbell and rack for the first time can feel daunting. The plates look heavy, the technique seems tricky, and working out how much weight to use can feel confusing. It's no surprise that many beginners avoid the barbell. But with the right approach, barbell training is the best use of your time and effort.

Why start with the barbell?

When used correctly and safely the barbell is one of the simplest and most effective tools for building strength. With just four key lifts (the squat, deadlift, bench press and overhead press) you can train your whole body in a way that is practical, effective and straightforward. Each lift allows for steady progress you can see. Each session brings small improvements that quickly compound as you become stronger.

Feeling nervous is normal

Most beginners feel a mix of nerves and uncertainty when they first get under the barbell. The good news is that this feeling does not last. With guidance, the movements become familiar and safe very quickly. At Body Mentors, we coach people step by step so they feel supported from the start. You do not need any prior experience. In many cases it is actually beneficial to come in as a complete beginner, as we can coach you in the correct technique from scratch.

The Body Mentors Approach

After coaching hundreds of clients, we have refined an approach that is simple but incredibly effective:

1

Learn the lifts and technique

We start with the four main barbell movements and teach you how to perform them safely and efficiently.

2

Add weight gradually

With each session more weight is added to the bar. Small increases (no more than 2.5kg) keep progress steady and safe.

3

Track your progress

Every rep and set is logged with the TrueCoach app so you can see your progress and stay motivated.

4

Feel stronger every week

Progress comes quickly, and within months you will feel stronger and more capable in and out of the gym.

You do not need to be fit, strong or confident before you start. All you need is the willingness to give it a go. With the right coaching and a supportive environment, anyone can learn to lift safely and start enjoying the benefits. Many of our clients began with no experience at all and now train with confidence every week.

If you’re curious, we offer a free 30-minute taster session. It is a chance to talk through your goals, try one of the four core lifts, and see how barbell training could benefit you!
